Five Words Musing - January

Today marks the day of a new collaborative project I am participating with two colleagues and friends. After our collaboration on the My Moon, Your Moon project, we just couldn't bear to think that that was the end of our work together. Our desire to continue our creative connections spawned a new project called Five Words Musing. The premise for the project is simple:

Five words presented on the 5th.
Two musings, painted and written, on the 20th.
The reasoning behind the choice of words for the close.
Twelve months in a row.
One year.

Like the moon project, we create our pieces independently and put them together on the agreed upon due dates. It's always nerve wracking to see if everyone's pieces will mesh together, and, like the moon project, we remain pleasantly surprised.

Here is my contribution to January's collaboration:

The five words for January made me think of my mother's homeland and their beliefs about death and rebirth and the afterlife. In Okinawa, when a family member dies, they are cremated and placed into a family tomb. These tombs, known as ohakas, are sometimes shaped like a turtle's shell (a symbol for birth). This design of the tomb has often been compared to the shape of a woman's womb, the place where life originally begins. So when you die, Okinawans believe that you return to the place of your birth to live again in the afterlife. Every year in April, Okinawans celebrate their ancestors during shimi. It not only serves as a time for families to honor and remember those who have passed, but it is a joyous occasion that brings families together. It's a different way to look at life and death.

With the arrival of the new year, I've been thinking about those I have lost and about my own mortality in getting older. With a new baby, it's hard not to let your mind wander and think about the future - the one where you will both exist and not exist in her world. Oh, don't forget about that dark cloud looming over my head about the end of days that is allegedly falling on my 34th birthday this year... Death seems like a scary state of being, but I think the Okinawans got in right. It's nice to think that it isn't an ending but a new beginning. So here's to new beginnings.

My Moon, Your Moon: Cold Moon

The final installment of My Moon, Your Moon is ready for your reading pleasure.

For our final moon, I was inspired by the memory of my nephew Brady who passed away last year. The night of this month's full moon fell on the one year anniversary of his death. That night, I remembered the precious time I got to spend with him and how suddenly it seemed to end. I was away on a business trip when I received the news that he had passed. That was a hard pill to swallow. I felt so helpless and so far away. I cried for my nephew. I cried for my sister and her family. I cried for the pain I felt in my heart. In the days that followed, I tried to be there for my sister as best as I could, but how do you ease the pain of something like that? A year later, it still stings.

But there are still miracles to be had. A few short days ago, my sister gave birth to a second daughter, Piper Quinn. And I am happy to report that mother and baby are doing wonderfully.

These two events, juxtaposed, inspired this full moon winter scene. Barren trees on a cold night made beautiful by the magic of soft falling snow, giving wonder and appreciation to a scene that was once desolate and cold.

Craft Night!

It had so long since I hosted a craft night, so when my best friend, Angela, suggested that we have one, I was in! I did a few before Izzy was born, and, now that she's getting older and I'm getting a hang of this whole mommy thing, I couldn't wait to get them started again. A recent trip to Dillard's inspired our craft for the night -- feather headbands. The one I fancied at Dillard's was $88! Surely, we could make some equally as stylish for the fraction of the cost.

To set us up for success, I gathered the appropriate materials:

Ample Snacks and Wine

Plenty of Feathers and Headbands

There is just something to be said about gathering around a table full of craft supplies and envisioning the possibilities for creating something new and fun. Plus, it's just nice to relax, sip wine, and create with a friend.

After we made our feather headbands, we began making flower headbands and pins, too. We were on a roll!

At the end of the night, we had so many new goodies to wear. It was just what the doctor ordered.

T'is the Season for the Handmade Market

One of the best things about living in Raleigh is the Handmade Market. It only happens twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, and it gives me a chance to be exposed to local, handmade artisans and their crafts.

I haven't been to the Handmade Market in a while (with having a baby and all), so, when my mom agreed to go with me this year and the hubby agreed to keep the baby for the afternoon, I was totally stoked! When I arrived at the market's new location at Cobblestone Hall, I was amazed by how much the event had progressed since the last time I went -- so many talented vendors, so many delicious treats, and a great location to boot!

My favorite find of the day were the beautiful pottery pieces by Dawn Tagawa Morgan of Tagawa Collection. Not only were her pieces gorgeous, they were affordable! I even got myself a little something and stocked up on Christmas goodies, too.

He loves him some t-shirts, I tell ya!

Afterward, me, my mom, my friends Alf and Beth, and Alf's mom, Nancy, went to lunch at Sitti. (I recently saw them covered in NC Weekend.) Honestly, they had some of the best Lebanese food I've ever eaten. Everything was so delicious and fresh!

I always love the holiday season in the Triangle because the handmade market scene is always so exciting. I get to speak with artists perfecting their crafts and usually go home owning something truly unique and special. The next Handmade Market event is in May. Hope to see you there!

My Moon, Your Moon: Beaver Moon

Warning: This may be one of the darkest moons we've posted so far. Recent horrific stories of child abuse and sexual deviance has influenced our work this month, triggering memories from our own childhoods... and making us realize we're fellow survivors of childhoods others would hardly be able to fathom. (Interesting how these topics have struck a common chord within us though there is no planning or collaboration for each moon posting we develop each month, don't you think?)

As a mother, I realize that there is evil that exists in this world from which I cannot fully protect my child, try as I might... But as Jim points out, as parents, we "cast our hopes on the resiliency of children..." I pray that my child never experiences unspeakable evil in her life as some children do, but, if she does, I pray that she has the resiliency to overcome it and survive and see the good that also exists in the world.

Some of you might recognize this scribble... It's Jason's signature. He kind of broke the rules with this one (the rule being that he shouldn't think about what he's going to scribble -- just do it). I'll let it slide this time, I guess. With this scribble, my mind drifted back to my time in Okinawa, and I was inspired by the loops in Jason's name to create yukata sleeves. I attended so many festivals and parties in my own yukata. It's one of the prettiest things I own next to my wedding dress. And, just like the wedding dress, I feel like a princess wearing it.

I submitted this one just under the wire. I tend to wait to do my submission for AEDM after Izzy has gone to sleep for the night. However, tonight, our routine took a bit longer to accomplish. There was a lot of mommy putting baby into the crib, baby crying, mommy rocking baby back to sleep, and mommy trying to put baby back down again. Finally, I just had to let her cry it out (it felt like eternity but in reality only lasted two minutes). I almost allowed the promise of sleep to persuade me to push the submission off until tomorrow, but Jason helped me find my motivation to finish it tonight. I hope you enjoy the mole digging his way into your hearts!

I've decided to sign up for the Art Every Day Month Challenge created by Leah Piken Kolidas of Creative Every Day. I thought this would be an excellent way to get my artistic juices revved up again. For the entire month, I've decided to create an original black and white drawing from a scribble my husband creates. Here's my first entry:

The process reminded me of a game I used to play with my sister when I was younger. We would each take turns drawing scribbles on pieces of paper and having the other person create a drawing from it. The goal was to make sense of something that, upon first glance, was nothing. It was fun to see the way our brains would process each scribble and turn them into creations that would often make us giggle and admire the other one's cleverness.

Though my first entry is not so "ha ha" funny, it's a start. I think this month will be an interesting journey into the way my mind tries to decipher my husband's scribbles. An interesting experiment into my psyche, no?

My Moon, Your Moon: Hunter Moon

This one really spoke to me, being a parent myself now. That combined with the arrival of autumn, seemed to appropriately reflect how I've been feeling lately -- feeling the need for change (and being ready for it). Art has definitely taken a back seat while I figure out this being a momma and an artist thing; I'm still trying to find that balance. Maybe it won't come as soon as I'd like, but I know I will figure it out eventually. In the mean time, I've been reading these posts by Dana Barbieri, an artist and a mommy herself, to give me inspiration.

For my fellow mommies out there, artist or not, how do you find balance?

A Delicate Blossom She Is Not

While Izzy has been napping during the day, I've been slowly fitting in some painting time for myself. It's felt really good to get my hands dirty in something other than spit up and baby poop (though I do that happily). This week, I began tinkering with a painting that I began in the spring and has laid unfinished on the shelf for a few months. Every time I entered my art studio to get on the computer, the painting glared at me, begging to be finished. Part of me was undecided on just how to finish it. It was pretty enough, but it needed something...

For those of you who know me, you know that I love words and often try to incorporate them in my art if at all possible. Looking at the unfinished painting, I suddenly had an idea of what I wanted to convey -- "A delicate blossom she was not. But she moved me just the same." These words are a reflection of how I see myself... but I didn't always see myself that way.

Growing up, I was painfully shy. You could barely get a peep out of me. I just never had the confidence that some of the other kids had. Maybe it had to do with being a child of divorce and not having my mother around anymore. Maybe it had to do with all of the moving around I did as a child and always being the new kid in town. Maybe it had to do with living hand-to-mouth and never knowing where the next meal would come from. Maybe it had to do with the strict father I had who, with just a look, could bring me to tears. Maybe it had to do with always being the only Asian kid in a 20 mile radius and being exposed to all the racism that goes along with that. A culmination of these influences and more made me a delicate child.

But there came a point in my life, where I began to gain the confidence I lacked for so long. I attribute that turning point to the day I was reunited with my mother. After living with my father for 12 years, my father finally decided to give custody of me, my sister, and my brother to our mother, so that he could begin a new life with a new wife in England. From that moment on, my life changed. All of the worries I had disappeared and all of the burden I shouldered was no longer expected of me. For once in my life, I could be a kid, and I had a mother to nurture me and to care for me. And, I tell you, once those basic needs are taken care of, you just gain the confidence you need to live life. My mother taught me how to be strong and be independent and to be proud of who I am and where I come from.

And now that I am a mother, myself, I hope to instill those same values to my daughter. I don't expect her to be refined and to always be a lady. Instead, I want her to be a mover and a shaker and to have the kind of childhood I never had. I want her to be a dreamer and to seize opportunities when they present themselves to her. I want her to laugh out loud and to get dirty and to dance like crazy when the spirit strikes her. For these are the things that will move me -- not a child of delicate perfection -- but a child who isn't afraid to live, to fall, to make mistakes, and to pick herself up and try again.

I am no longer that delicate cherry blossom, falling apart at the slightest rattle (though memories of that time will always linger within me). I am stronger now and have realized my dream to move people with my art. And as I settle into motherhood, this will continue to be my dream... that, and raising Izzy, my ultimate creation, to move others.

A Letter to Myself

What a busy few months it's been! I know I haven't posted a lot lately, but I've had a good excuse. And though it may not seem like I've been creating anything lately, I've been keeping my creative juices flowing with a side project that I'm thoroughly enjoying. My life has been busy with not much time for art right now, but it has been rewarding.

So you can imagine my surprise when I received the following letter a few weeks ago...

It was the letter I had written to myself last July while attending the Gutsy Girl's Guide to Success in Washington, DC.

There was even this sweet message from Molly, the brain child behind the workshop, written on the back of the letter:

I couldn't remember what I had written to myself that one year ago, so I opened the letter and braced myself for the message inside...

When I think back to where I was this time last year and think about where I am now, I am happy with what I've accomplished. I participated in a craft fair, I created an online presence, and now, I am enjoying motherhood. I have a few more goals up my sleeve, but, for now, I am going to enjoy my new role as mommy.

My Moon, Your Moon: Pink Moon

Another installment for the My Moon, Your Moon series is up and ready for your reading enjoyment. With the last moon posting and this month's moon posting, it seems that the planet is a restless place. North Carolina recently experienced one of the most devastating tornadoes that I have ever seen in my lifetime -- and it only happened a few miles from my own home. And most recently, it seems that the same devastation was repeated in Alabama and its surrounding areas several days later. In a matter of moments, lives were changed. Some people are feeling blessed to be spared from the destruction; others are mourning over so much lost. And still yet, others are unaffected and going on with daily life, with tragedy's arm only reaching so far.

I remember observing the moon on its full moon night, a couple of days after the tornado hit the Raleigh area, and noticed how still and quite the sky was. Next to the moon, I noticed a criss-crossing of clouds, illuminated by the moon's brilliance. Were the clouds serving as a tribute to those who recently lost their lives? Whatever their purpose, I paused for a moment to reflect... Sometimes there really is no rhyme or reason for how the events in our lives unfold; however, how we respond in those moments of great happiness or sadness can define us. I only hope that when faced with such circumstances, ambivalence is not an acceptable option.

My Moon, Your Moon: Super Crow Moon

A new moon post is up for March. This moon was reported by NASA as being a super moon, the biggest seen from Earth in 20 years. Although this should have been an inspiration to paint, this phenomenon was overshadowed for me by recent world events. The world feels a little darker and restless with the devastation Japan is facing every day as a result of the most recent earthquake and tsunami destruction as well as and the very real threat of nuclear meltdown permeating throughout the country. Even in the face of such unthinkable disasters, I have hope for Japan and for the people who have lost so much. It is my hope for Japan to heal and rebuild that has inspired my recent contribution to the My Moon, Your Moon project.

An Artist in My Midst

My father-in-law passed away in January. Our family learned last year in September that he was diagnosed with stage IV bladder cancer. As you can imagine, the news was devastating to our family. But despite this daunting news, our family really came together in those last months to show him our support and to give him our love. He was a wonderful man -- caring and loving -- and though the time we had left with him went by way too fast, we were able to create some wonderful memories that we will carry with us for life.

One thing that I learned about my father-in-law, Larry Dale, in the time that I knew him was that he was an artist. I learned this one spring when my husband and I went to Florida to spend Easter with his parents. One corner of the sun room in their home housed an easel with paints. Surrounding his work station were his finished paintings.

"I didn't know you painted," I told him, surprised. He told me that it was something he really enjoyed and wanted to explore more often. An artist in my midst; I was intrigued.

Even in his last days, my father-in-law had art on his mind. He told us that Moses had come to him and told him to paint again -- but this time, he should put the voice of God in his paintings. Although Larry Dale did not get a chance to create more art before he passed away, I think my husband's brother explained it best at Larry's funeral. He said that we, his family, were his works of art. And through us, he leaves a legacy that is a reflection of his faith.

I agree. With our own child on the way, I like the idea of art imitating life and life imitating art. Larry Dale was not only able to apply a paint brush to canvas to create the beauty that he saw within his artist's mind, but he was able to extend that idea of beauty and share it with the world in the family that he created.

Etsy Shop is Now Open

Guess what!

The day has arrived... I've finally opened my Etsy store for Inochi Designs.

This plan has been in the works for LONG time. After the October craft show, I had lots of inventory left over that I planned on immediately featuring on my Etsy store, but I learned that life had other plans for me. Now with a new year starting and my energy levels shooting up in my second trimester, what better time to take advantage of this renewed sense of motivation and refocus my efforts on my art?

Although there are just a few items featured on the online store now, I plan on posting prints and original art this weekend as well. Don't forget to check the Etsy mini to the right of my blog posts to easily access the online store, too.

2011 So Far...

I have not started this year off with a list of resolutions as I often do. The end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 have been sad ones, leaving little motivation to imagine new and exciting possibilities for the new year. But as time passes, I realize that continuing with life is the only way to truly heal with the loss of loved ones. Life is beautiful and precious, even with the sadness it can bring. And with a new little life on the way, I believe this more than ever.

So what does 2011 have in store for me?

Well, on Jan. 15th, I submitted my sketchbook for the Sketchbook Project of 2011. I went back and forth all year on whether or not I was even going to participate in the project, but at the last moment, I chose to go for it. I completed my sketchbook in less than 24 hours and shipped it off on the deadline. It was the hardest, most exhausting artistic effort I've ever undertaken, but I was glad that I committed to doing it. The end product may not have been what I had hoped for, but the fact that I finished it was satisfying enough for me. The only regret that I have is that I have no photographic evidence of my efforts -- good thing I paid the extra fee for the Brooklyn Museum of Art to digitally archive it for me!

Beginning in February, my sketchbook will go on tour across the country with 28,837 other artists from 94 countries. I hope to check it once the tour reaches DC or Atlanta. If you'd like to check out my artist profile on the project site, please click here:

Another project I'm participating in this year is one with an esteemed colleague from work, Jim Penny. He approached me last year and told me about his idea of using the full moons of 2011 as the inspiration for a collection of essays and artwork. Each month on the full moon, he would write and I would paint or draw. Then, the next day, we would share what we created and post them on a blog. To see our first efforts, please visit our blog affectionately named My Moon, Your Moon. I feel honored to be a part of such special project and to have my work presented next to Jim's writing. He has a style that is truly his own; his words have the ability to pull you in instantly and expose the experience or memory he is sharing as if it were your own to bear. I do have aspirations for a wonderful 2011. I am currently working my way through Goddess Leonie's Goddess Guidebook to help me sort out and envision what those aspirations are. In the short term, I know I want good health for myself and for my family, a continued desire to learn and grow as an artist, and the ability to recognize and appreciate the blessings that life has to offer. How those wants get translated are the surprises I wait for with the passing of each new moon. Here's to a wonderful 2011.

Goodbye Lil' Superman

I know I have been absent for a while here. After the craft fair, life just seemed to get crazy for me. The happiest and most life altering event that has happened so far was learning that my husband and I are expecting. Our first child is due on June 24, 2011, and we couldn't be happier. As you can imagine, I've been going through all the things one goes through with pregnancy - fatigue, nausea, weird pregnancy cravings, etc. And as I enter into my second trimester, I can already tell that I am starting to feel like my old self again (with the exception of my growing belly). With this renewed energy I am hoping to get back into my studio to create some new pieces for the New Year.

But even with happiness, sometimes sadness comes, too. Perhaps the most devastating event that has happened was the recent passing of my nephew Brady. After five months of being treated for his congenital heart condition, he passed away on December 10th. As you can imagine, my family is heart broken. But despite our great loss, we gained so much from Brady. I think the pastor at Brady's funeral summed it up best. He said, "I counted the days. Brady was here on this earth for 145 days. And in those 145 days, he accomplished more than most people do in their entire lives. He made us all better people. He brought us together as a community, and he showed us the power of love."

At Brady's funeral, most of the nurses from the PICU unit where Brady received a majority of his care came to pay their condolences and read a poem that they dedicated to Brady. They called him their Little Superman. This may have been because my sister dressed him up as Superman for Halloween, but I think it was mostly because he was a fighter and endured a lot during his short time with us.

After the funeral, the nurses came to my sister's home, bearing red and blue helium balloons (Superman's colors). They planned on releasing the balloons in memory of Brady. As we all stood in the cold, one of the nurses sang a song she often sang to the children in her life - "A Bushel and Peck."

It was sweet. When the song was over, we released our balloons into the night sky. They traveled together in a cluster up to heaven, and up to Brady. It was a beautiful moment.

A few days after the funeral, I heard the song "One Last Christmas" by Matthew West on the radio. Not only did it bring tears to my eyes, it really struck a chord with me. It reminded me of Brady and how much he has changed our lives. I think my sister-in-law said it best in responding to the song: "That is beautiful. There is such goodness in the world even in the face of tragedy. Proof that every person no matter how small can touch the world in an amazing way. Brady did just that!"

Thank you Brady for blessing us with your love. You'll live forever in our hearts.

Paintin' Punkins

Yesterday, I spent the day in Greenville visiting my sister and my sweet baby nephew, Brady. It's been three months since he was born, and my sister has been right by his side, everyday, as he recuperates in the hospital. He has had more complications than we expected, but we are all very hopeful that he will be going home soon.

As you can imagine, spending that much time away from home can be difficult, but my sister has shown an amazing amount of strength during this whole experience. I have witnessed more acts of kindness from the community and support from family and friends, that I know it has made some of the stress and worry of Brady's situation subside for my sister and her family. She has grown to know nothing else over the course of these few months but to be the best mother she can be for Brady. And I know that the excellent care and amazing skill of the hospital staff on the PICU floor has truly enabled her to do that as well.

I think it is Barbara's complete devotion to Brady and her determination to be an advocate for his treatment that has made her a favorite among the nursing staff on the PICU floor. Time and time again I hear the nurses tell my sister that she is a breath of fresh air. They work in a world where not every parent cares; they witness some horrendous crimes against children that cause them to be patients on the PICU floor. So to see someone who loves their child as much as Barbara loves Brady, I know it must give them hope.

To help pass her time in the hospital, the Child Life specialist has befriended my sister and has given her great activities to do during her visits with Brady. One of the most popular activities to date is pumpkin painting. It started off small with Barbara painting a pumpkin for Brady. But then she started getting requests from other patients and the nursing staff to paint pumpkins for them as well. So when I showed up yesterday, Barbara said, "Guess what we're doing today..." When she told me, I couldn't wait to get started.

Even though this journey with Brady has been a difficult one, I am so very thankful for the little moments and the happy celebrations that have made this journey for my sister and her family one of hope and love. Thank you to all who have kept my sister and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

A Perfect Day

On October 2nd, Inochi Designs made it's debut to the public at the Sertoma Arts Fair in Raleigh. Back in July, I attended an awesome workshop about taking charge of your own happiness, setting goals, and working toward achieving those goals. One of the goals that I set for myself was to participate in an arts fair. Luckily for me, I got that opportunity, and I seized it. Since July, I've been using every spare moment to prepare for the fair. I planned, I researched, and I created but not without obstacles. Some of the people I love dearly in my life are facing some serious health challenges which have left me feeling helpless. I felt guilty doing anything that wasn't related to making their situation less crumby. But my husband had a heart-to-heart with me to let me know that it was okay and that life must go on even when terrible things are happening. To give up or to stop living takes away from the good that can come from chasing your dreams. So, I tried to find that balance of being supportive to these loved ones and preparing for the art fair.

I took two days off from work to finish any last minute details for the event. (I think I went to bed at 1 a.m. both nights -- unheard of in my universe.) My friends were also supportive and offered help where they could by doing things like helping me package products to turning PDFs to jpegs to providing me with a solution to be able to run credit card purchases. My husband, Jason, and my good friend, Shannon, also put in their time to help me organize my booth set up. Without everyone's help, I would not have been able to pull it all off.

When the morning of October 2nd came around, I was SO EXCITED and NERVOUS. Here I was, putting myself out there for the world to see. But by doing so, I learned that there IS a niche of people out there who actually enjoy my art. I received so many compliments that day, both for my booth set up and for my art work, and I had so many of my friends and coworkers show up to support me that it really made me feel like a true artist. I felt validated in pursuing this dream. When it was all over, I had a renewed sense of motivation. There is so much more I want to do with this dream of mine. So much more... and I can't wait to share it all with you.

It was truly a perfect day.

Sertoma Arts Fair

Over the past month or so, I've been using my spare time creating and crafting like crazy. It's felt great to have a goal that pushes me to share my art in a way that I've never done before. In July, I decided to take the leap and send in my application to participate in my first arts fair. Taking that leap has been scary, but I've enjoyed the growth it has given me professionally and creatively. This is me getting my feet wet and, hopefully, opening the door to other creative endeavors.

As part of the process for participating in the arts fair, the Sertoma Arts Center asked that participating artists and crafters send in pictures of their work to possibly include on their promotional materials. I sent in my submissions and thought, "Wouldn't it be great to be selected?" I waited anxiously for the center to contact me when the materials would be ready for distribution.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from the arts center that announced that postcards and posters for the event were ready to be picked up. When I went to the arts center to pick up the materials, I began scanning the design. Fall Arts Fair... Wait... Is that?.... YES! My painting made it into the design! I wanted to jump up and down. I squealed inside. I sent a picture text to my friends and family. I just couldn't believe it.

Sure. The whole painting is not included. It's a little "Where's Waldo?", but, hey, it counts, right? I'm over the moon about it. Seeing my painting there, peeking out from behind the text of the event, well, it just made me more determined to create and prepare my booth.

I hope you come out and visit. The event looks like it's going to be a blast. Bring the kiddies. There's lots for them to do. Bring your significant other. Shop for Christmas presents. Stop by and say hello. I'll be the girl in the outside booth with a smile plastered across my face.

Trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art

The North Carolina Museum of Art reopened its doors in April after completing some major renovations. I have not had the opportunity to go there since the renovation, and the last time that I went to the museum was with my now husband on our first official date. My friend, Diane, mentioned last week that she was going to go to the museum on Saturday, so I happily volunteered my time to go with her (a.k.a. I kind of invited myself to go).

We met at the NCMA and decided to start things off with a delicious brunch at the Iris Cafe, located just inside the newly constructed buildings of the museum. The cafe is very spacious and very white - white tables, white walls, white chairs. Spurts of color were added by way of table mats and Gerbia daisies on every table. A large installation balanced the openness of the white room by covering the main wall with bare branches and vines from ceiling to floor. The swirling arrangement of the piece made it flow like water on the wall.

If there is one thing I love more than art, it is good food. For brunch, I ordered a mimosa and the Carolina crab cake Benedict, served on a spinach waffle, drizzled in a golden curry Hollandaise sauce, and served with brunch potatoes. It was to die for.

After stuffing ourselves with brunch, we began to find our way through the maze of exhibits. Diane had a degree in art history and served as my own personal museum guide. We slowly explored each painting, each sculpture, each piece at the museum and enjoyed all of the rich history and expression we found around us.

Cinderella had glass slippers. I have a glass dress. Top that, Cinderella!

I particularly enjoyed the Rodin exhibit. It extended out into the courtyard just outside of the museum. Outside, we found Rodin's sculptures bordering a rectangular pond stocked with lily pads. We were lucky to have a warm, sunny day to enjoy the area.

I don't know about Diane, but I left the museum feeling inspired, dreaming about the next painting I would create and wondering where it would end up. In someone's home? On the wall of an office? Displayed in a museum like this? No matter its destination, a painting is an artifact of an artist's soul, and yet, it has a life and a history of its own separate from the artist. Knowing this, and being able to see works of art collected in one space like this, gives me a special kind of energy. On the one hand, I imagine the artist creating, pondering his empty canvas or staring at his slab of marble. And with a special force guiding him, he creates a piece that merits preservation beyond his own life. On the other hand, I imagine the life of the work as it leaves its master's hands and becomes the prize and inspiration for those who possess it. Knowing that there is a story behind every work of art, inspires me to discover what is the magic about the work I am drawn to. This exercise energizes me and lulls me into a deep appreciation for the arts. For me, the arts are magical. And a little magic every now and then never hurt anybody.

Experimenting with Image Transfer

It's been busy here on the home front as I continue to prepare for October's Arts and Crafts Fair in Raleigh. In an attempt to create some new pieces for the fair, I spent one weekend experimenting with image transfer. I've always wondered how it was done, particularly when creating a mixed media collage. I found the following video on Vimeo and was determined to learn how to do it myself:

So with supplies in hand, I began to experiment.

I began with taping down a piece of water color paper and saturating it with water. I also trimmed some images that I wanted to transfer to my paper.

Next, I began applying color to the saturated paper.

Once the color and paper were dry, I began to spread a thick coat of gel medium evenly on my images. Once the images were coated, I plopped them face down on my paper. To ensure even adherence to the paper, I used a brayer to flatten the images.

I allowed the images to dry completely. Once the images were dry, I used a spray bottle of water to saturate the images. Using my fingers and a sponge, I rubbed off the paper backing of the images. As I rubbed the paper away, I could start to see mirror images of my... well... images. This is what I ended up with:

The first few image transfers I created, I went back over with pen and ink to create details and faces. Although I like the final pieces, I felt that the pen and ink work took away from the original images.

On my second round of image transfers, I tried something different. Instead of coloring the paper first, I transferred the images first and did the water color last. As you can see, the gel medium blocked the water color from saturating the paper.

Although I enjoyed experimenting with image transfers, I still think I need quite a bit of practice, both in patience and in technique.

Art Exchange

As I go through the process of emerging as a bonafide artist, I sometimes have doubts about myself. Although I enjoy creating art, I wonder if what I create is enough. I'll be the first to admit that what I create doesn't push the boundaries of art by being risque or by making some kind of political or religious statement... at least, not at this point in my journey. I simply create to make something beautiful, pretty, and even cute. Typically, I like to create something girlie, colorful, and cheery as these are my subjects of choice.

Knowing this, my friend, Carlleena, who is also an artist going through her own creative journey, asked if I would paint something for her. I agreed as long as she would paint something for me as well -- we would have an art exchange of sorts. To give me some direction on what I would paint for her, I only asked that Carlleena give me two of her favorite colors and a verb she liked. She gave me turquoise, red, and inspire.

With just those three words, I began to paint. As I painted, I began to remember the good ol' days we had in high school. (It's been a very long time since I've seen Carlleena and a visit is long overdue, I know.) I knew I wanted to incorporate her sense of strength, adventure, and playfulness -- all traits that inspire those who know her. In the end, I ended up with this interpretation, using fluid acrylic paints, scrapbook paper, ink, and gloss gel medium.

I enjoyed the process so much, that I requested my fans on Facebook to give me two colors and a word they like. I received a lot of good suggestions so far... Now to find the time to execute them and, hopefully, have something to show soon.

Busy, Busy, Busy

In July, I decided to take my first professional leap into presenting myself as an artist to the public. Prior to making this decision, I recently completed two online courses. The first was The Joy Equation where I worked through my own quarter life crisis and actively defined for myself what my authentic joy looked like. I did this with the guidance of one lovely Molly Hoyne. The second was Flying Lessons where I had access to a special blog created by Kelly Rae Roberts that revealed all the things I ever wanted to know about being a self-starter artist. Both women gave me the motivation I needed to believe, "I can do this!"

After completing the courses, I received an email from the Raleigh Parks and Recreation saying that they were offering an early bird registration special for local artists and crafters to be vendors in their fall arts and crafts fair. I took it as a sign from the universe that it was either now or never and sent in my application. (Specific details about the event to come later.)

Since then, I've been using my time after work to research, prepare, and create items for my first arts and crafts fair. There's a lot to do, but I have been enjoying spending my evenings and weekends working on things for the fair. It's made me realize the energy and commitment that is needed to do this thing I love. I've been using some great online resources and have also been reading The Handmade Marketplace by Kari Chapin. As the days pass and the fair gets closer, my excitement and nervousness grows. That first weekend in October is going to be surreal. I hope Jason has a nice glass of Zinfandel waiting for me when I get home that evening. Now back to work...

Get Your Motor Runnin': Shannon Takes on Sturgis

My friend, Shannon, is taking advantage of her youth and traveling across the country as we speak to Sturgis, South Dakota. Why? To take part in the 70th anniversary Sturgis Rally of course. She will be spending a full week there, witnessing all of the fun and craziness that is rumored to come with biker rallies. Cue theme music, please...

Now, when you meet Shannon for the first time, you would never guess that she was a biker chick... And, well, she wasn't when I met her. But she has found a man that has really made her very happy, and he happens to enjoy riding a motorcycle. In fact, he belongs to a biker club known as JABG. Jim (the lucky man's name) has been able to share his love of the open road with Shannon, and she seems to really love it.

When she told everyone that she would be going to Sturgis for the biker rally, Shannon's mom, Cree, asked if I would help her with a surprise for Shannon. She wanted to give her something special for her trip. We put our heads together and came up with some design ideas for fashionable biker chick wear using thin strap tank tops.

The first tank top stencil design I drafted featured her destination, Sturgis. Our goal was to make her the envy of all the biker chicks there.

The second tank top stencil that was drafted was designed to make her an official member of the JABG.

The final tank top stencil drafted featured Shannon's childhood nickname (which I like to use even now). I figured it's better for a biker to have a nickname, no?

When Cree and I presented the tank tops to Shannon, she was so surprised and happy. (Yay!) I'm glad she'll be sporting my unique biker chick fashions at the rally. A girl has to look good while kicking @ss and taking names, right?

My Wish for Brady

Nine months ago, my sister shared with me that she was going to have another baby. I was overjoyed and excited for her. I have such a strong emotional attachment to her daughter and love her with all my heart - that to add on to that love with another baby - I just couldn't be happier.

During her pregnancy, I was hungry for updates from her and devoured every snippet of news and every ultrasound I could get my hands on for the new baby. During around her 18 week ultrasound, she learned that she was going to have a boy... and she learned that he had a heart defect known as right atrial isomerism.

She was devastated.

As an older sister, I felt helpless. All I could do was cry with her and try to comfort her, but what could I say or do? All I could think was the worst and all I could hope for was the best.

After the initial shock of the news, I saw a side of my sister I had never seen before. After she mourned the idea of having a perfect child, she began to take charge of the situation by learning about the baby's condition and actively asking questions of the doctor and of the surgeon who would be attending to his care. The feedback that she would receive from the doctors was ever changing. Sometimes they would say that the baby had a 99% chance of surviving his first surgery, but then, at another check up, their estimate dropped down to 33%. It was an emotional roller coaster ride as the assessment of the baby's health changed at each visit.

We were hesitant to do the normal things you do when expecting a baby. Plans for a baby shower were postponed. But as it got closer to her due date, Barbara began preparing the baby's nursery and asked me to create a custom nursery display for his room. So, up until the day he was born, I created the following display for the baby:

Brady - that was the darling name she chose for him. I thought about Brady with every stitch I sewed and every stroke of paint I brushed. It was my way of helping her and sending good thoughts into the universe.

On July 19th at 3:32 p.m., Brady Charles Dauberman was born. I had the honor of being in the room during his birth, and it was the most amazing experience I had ever witnessed. My sister became a superhero in my eyes that day. And, just like the birth of her daughter, I fell in love with Brady. My heart overflowed with joy.

Brady has already undergone his first of many surgeries and is still in the hospital recuperating. Barbara has been right by his side, providing me with daily updates about his progress. Now that he is here, I can only for wish for him to have a speedy recovery so that he can be brought home and doted upon by the people who love him most. He will not have an easy life, but he will be loved and cherished. Until Barbara is able to bring sweet Brady home, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Rainy Day Activity - Flower Pins!

It's pouring down rain today. What better way to pass the time than a little crafting?

A friend of mine asked how I make flower pins, so I thought I'd share that process with you. They're so easy to make and make great gifts.

First, you need the following materials:

felt
thread and needle (preferably the same color as the felt)
buttons
hot glue and hot glue gun
1.25" bar pins
ribbon (optional)

Step One: Cut a strip of felt, long ways.

Step Two: Cut your petal pattern. These can be as long or as skinny as you want. I chose this pattern to make a daisy.

Step Three: Fold the first petal in half and pinch it. Sew the pinched felt at the top. Go to the next petal and repeat. As you move along petal to petal, sew each new petal to the one before it.

Step Four: Sew the first and last petals together so that your flower is fully formed.

Step Five: Turn the flower over and close the hole by sewing one petal to the petal directly across from it. Continue sewing the petals in a crisscross manner.

Step Six: Turn the flower back over to the front and select a button to hot glue to the front. Once you have a button, put a small dab of hot glue in the center of the flower. Quickly press the button on top, making sure that some of the glue comes up through the button holes. This will help to provide extra support to keep the button on the flower.

Step Six and Half: If you want to add any embellishments like leaves or ribbon, measure out your embellishments so that they can be seen from behind the flower. If you are happy with the placement, hot glue them to the back of the flower.

Step Seven: Cut an oval shaped piece of felt to cover the back of the flower. (If you have added any embellishments, this piece would just go over the back of the embellishments.) Once you have the piece prepared, hot glue it to the back of the flower.

Step Eight: Get a bar pin to hot glue to the back of the felt cover. Carefully put hot glue on the back of the bar pin, and like the button in the front, push it to the felt so that some of the hot glue comes up through the holes.

Step Nine: Wait for the hot glue to cool completely. Wear with any of your outfits to jazz up your wardrobe and feel like a diva instantly.

DC Recap, Ya'll!

What a fabulous weekend in DC.

Angela and I arrived at the great capital city on Friday afternoon, excited to explore and get some grub. After having a lovely dinner at Thai Tanic, we headed toward Pentagon City so that I could purchase some sandals and have a bit of retail therapy. It was good to get away from the hustle and bustle of our normal lives and spend some quality girl time together.

The next day, we got up bright and early to attend The Gutsy Girl's Guide to Success. (It was our whole reason for the trip, after all.) Held at George Washington University, the workshop was conducted in an intimate classroom setting. Angela and I found ourselves among other young women interested in a common pursuit - authentic joy. We were lead through a series of exercises and discussions by the lovely Molly Hoyne of Stratejoy. I had been following Molly's work on Stratejoy for some time. And when the opportunity arose that I could be a participant in her mission to help women realize their own authentic joy, I took a leap of faith to participate.

Although we all had different reasons for being there, there was a shared interest among the women in that room to no longer be wall flowers in their own lives. Truths were being shared among strangers and to ourselves, and though some of the activities were unexpectedly revealing, the forum felt safe and energizing.

We even had a guest speaker, the successful Kimberly Wilson of TranquiliT. A self proscribed "teacher, writer, do-gooder, entrepreneur, and eco-fashion designer," Kimberly shared with us her story of finding her own joy and her adventures into entrepreneurship. She was informative, ambitious, but, most of all, refreshingly down-to-earth. My favorite part of her visit was her top five list for being a tranquilista:

Spirituality is a priority.
Take action.
Your life is art.
Exude style.
Leave a legacy.

Overall, I left the workshop feeling inspired and motivated. I learned that I'm a big picture kind of person who sometimes has trouble with follow through. But I was able to learn some helpful tips to make meaningful goals with achievable actions. I have a couple of projects to flesh out in my own pursuit of authentic joy - and I can't wait to get started. It was such a pleasure to meet Molly and all of the lovely participants in DC.

On our last day in city, Angela and I ventured out to King Street in Virginia to visit the downtown area for brunch and shopping. I saw so many interesting things there that I just had to capture them all on camera.

My best discovery on King Street was chai bubble tea. I. Loved. It. If you can stomach the look of the tapioca balls in the bottom of the tea, I highly recommend it. It's like a dessert and a drink in one.

Heading home to North Carolina was a reminder that I was stepping back into my life after stepping out of it for an exercise in self reflection. I was heading back to my life with purpose with the intention of making some real progress in this pursuit of a creative life. It may not all happen at once, but I am enjoying the journey. After all, isn't that what it's all about?

Gutsy Girls Road Trip

Guess what...

I'm going on a road trip to DC this weekend with my bestie, Angela. Why? Well, since the beginning of the year, we have made it a priority to meet at least once a month to spend some quality time together. We're both working professionals with families, and we wanted to make our friendship a priority. Sometimes you just need to spend time with your girlfriends, you know? It really is the best kind of rejuvenation.

This month is my month.

So I decided to sign us up for a day long workshop in DC. A workshop, you ask? Yup. For the past couple of weeks, Angela and I have been taking The Joy Equation course through Stratejoy. The brain child of Molly Hoyne, Stratejoy's goal is help women find authentic happiness in their lives by conquering their own quarterlife crises. (Who wouldn't want to find authentic happiness, right?) So far, we've really enjoyed the journal prompts and audio lessons that the course has had to offer. We've been sharing our own observations of the course and of ourselves and have found it both enlightening and fun. And this weekend, we get to meet the inspiring lady behind it all.

The search for authentic happiness has been an interesting one. Why this course? Well, at least for me, I was searching for something that would help me realize, organize, and execute this dream I have for a creative life. I have the vision and I have the desire; I just need help with the implementation. I needed help with taking the big picture and breaking it down into manageable and executable parts. (Hell, I needed help with even defining what those parts should be.)

As a creative spirit, setting actionable goals has not really been my forté. Initially, my dream was so big that when the dream didn't come to fruition as quickly as I would have liked, I had the tendency to let the dream fade or go stale. Molly has taught me some amazing skills that really challenged me to look deep within myself to define that dream and set goals to make it a reality.

This has been an exciting time in my life right now. Even if I am not living the dream yet, I am enjoying the journey.

My friend Jeanine is surviving and thriving after breast cancer.

On Saturday, I went to visit Jeanine and help her hang up the last of the canvases for the Words to Live By Project. Once we went through the process of measuring, hanging, and straightening the canvases, we stood back in awe of the final product - both with a feeling of astonishment and nostalgia. On the wall hung 54 paintings, each representing a week in Jeanine's life since being diagnosed with breast cancer. As we stood and looked at the collection, we began analyzing each row of paintings and sharing which one in each row was our favorite (because it was just too hard to pick one). To capture the moment, Jeanine grabbed her Flip video camera and recorded this impromptu interview with me about the project.

But rather than go on and tell you about my perception of the project, I thought I would invite Jeanine to be a guest blogger (my first!) and share with you what the Words to Live By Project has meant to her over the past year.

What has the WTLB Project meant to me?

When I got cancer, I quickly saw how difficult it was for the people around me. I also did NOT see how difficult it was for some people because many people disappeared out of my life. They did not know what to do, so when in doubt, chicken out, I guess. Diana was never and will never be one of those people. She has been one of my go to girls during the last year. If I was going to chemo for the first time, you would find her by my side. If I was put in isolation at the hospital, you would find her all decked out in a beautiful yellow smock and a mask keeping me company. If I was going to have a party, you would find her leading the charge as my party planner. If I was sick in bed, you would find her willing to just sit in the bed and talk. So it is not surprising to me that she jumped in with her gifts and talents and created the Words to Live By Project that would help sustain me for the 54 weeks to come.

Diana was an integral shopping and designing partner when I created my home office 3 years ago. She was with me as I purchased almost every single piece of furniture or decoration for the space and it looked great - except for the massive wall behind my desk that is the focal point when you walk in the room. We looked everywhere for art for the space and quickly realized that we had polar opposite tastes. We could agree on everything but art. I told her at the time, that when the right thing comes along, we will know it. Little did I imagine that I would have to get cancer to find just the right art to finish off my office decorations!

When Diana gave me my first Words to Live By piece, I was blown away. Yes, the art was amazing and the quote was wonderful. But this was also the first person who I felt understood the need for me to look and plan ahead. Cancer was going to be tough, but more importantly, I was going to need to focus on enjoying the journey. I had been struggling with accepting the idea that I could live or die and that I had no way of knowing what was going to happen. I decided very early on that the way that I dealt with cancer from the very beginning was going to determine who I was as a person - not the cancer. The Words to Live By Project helped frame the year ahead. It was going to be tough, but each week was a week that I could put behind me and focus on celebrating the good parts of the week. Diana chose unbelievable quotes to use and highlighted my real life through the artwork and the quote that she picked - each of which was spot on. Her project was an artistic journal for my year.

Diana has an amazing gravity. When she is around you, you want to be pulled into it because it is full of light, hope, love, caring, and sparkle! The Words to Live By Project was my own way of staying in her gravity, even on the bad days. In the really horrible days following chemo treatments, I would sit in my office and stare at the wall of art being built. I would focus on being able to read and process each piece of art. Processing was a real struggle at times, but never with her art. It was soothing and asked nothing of me in return. I can remember my excitement when the first row was hung (9 pieces!) that signified that I was 1/6 of the way done with the first year of treatments. The wall was the constant. It kept moving forward even when I felt like I was moving backward. The treatments got harder, but the wall kept propelling me towards a finish line in my head.

There is a part of me that is thrilled that the project is over because it signifies a long year full of challenges facing a disease I never wanted. There is another part of me that will miss the project, because it is an amazing feeling to know that someone loves you each and every week and was thinking of how to make a difference in my life through her gifts. Who wouldn't miss that? But instead, I am going to think of the gifts that I have and try to do the same thing for someone else. The Words to Live By Project is full of individual quotes and paintings, but the real message is that I am loved by a very special woman - a woman that each week helped me realize that I still had the best of my life ahead. Thank you my dear, sweet, wonderful friend!

First Friday in Downtown Raleigh

Last Friday I had the desire to see art. I wanted to walk around and absorb beauty. I wanted to be inspired, and I wanted to be intrigued. What better way to spend a Friday evening than to make my way downtown for First Friday? During every first Friday of the month, businesses in downtown Raleigh sponsor art showings paired with good food and great music.

The highlights for me? My visits to the Visual Art Exchange and Artspace were definitely at the top of my list. Both venues had an exhibition of talented, local artists. The VAE held a formal show while Artspace opened up each artist's studio space to the general public. At both events, artists were present so that visitors could ask questions and connect, not only with the work, but with the artist themselves.

There is something to be said about being allowed to cross the threshold of an artist's studio and really see the environment in which the artist's art is created. Some artists are methodical and have bright and organized studios. Others studios are in disarray but even their messes have a delicate beauty to them. I could have stayed there for hours.

I am in love...

With my new business cards. Aren't they just darling?

Business cards are a big deal in Japan. (Maybe that's why I wanted some ever so badly.) There is an established ritual surrounding the proper way to present, exchange, and accept meishi (business cards) from the people you meet. Now I have some to share. Yay!

I used Vista Print to design and create the pink business cards using an online template that allowed me to upload my own graphics. I ordered the variety pack featuring my artwork from Moo using pictures from my Flickr account. I'm very happy with the results.

I have been setting small goals for myself to slowly creep into this creative life. My first goal was to create a website. Check. My second goal was to create business cards. Check. I love checking things off my list, don't you?

My friend Jeanine is surviving and thriving after breast cancer.

June 15th was Jeanine's one year anniversary. Last year on that day she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was dealing with the reality of that truth. And since that day, she has been on special journey, a journey that has had tested her and those who love her. She is in a very different place now than she was that day. The world looks a little different and she has hope for the future.

Week 53

The week after her anniversary, Jeanine visited Duke Hospital where they were proud to announce after her latest mammogram that she "shows no evidence of cancer." She declared it the best day ever... and so do we.

This project started out as my way to support Jeanine through her journey with cancer, but I ended up being the one who is inspired. A year has passed, but Jeanine is not finished with her journey. At the end of May, we traveled to Indiana to attend a memorial service for Jason's grandfather who passed away in December. A lot of Jason's brothers and sisters attended the memorial service. And although she really wanted to go, Jeanine had to stay behind in North Carolina. It was doctor's orders. Her white blood cell counts were just too low, and it really bummed her out to not be able to attend. However, her sister, Kristie, came up with a plan to record video messages from everyone attending the memorial, so that Jeanine would know that she was in our thoughts even though she couldn't be with us. I know she really appreciated being thought of so far away.

Week 50

During the first week of June, some of the Patten women met up in Charlotte to watch Wicked and celebrate our niece's graduation from junior high school. We had a fabulous dinner at P.F. Chang's and headed to the Ovens Auditorium to watch the show. During the musical, Jeanine heard the song, "For Good," and whispered to me, with tears in her eyes, that she had found her new funeral song. I joked with her and said, "Thanks for ruining that song for me." I think the Pattens are the only people I know who declare their funeral soundtracks. Funny but true.

And finally, after many, many torturous months, Jason was able to shave off his mustache. As his shave date got closer and closer, I asked if he wanted to throw a party to celebrate the shaving of his mustache. I had ideas of making a mustache pinata, mustache-shaped food, and mustache favors, but no. Jason didn't want any part of it. When I asked him why, he said, "For the last nine months, I've had to look in the mirror and see this mustache. When I see this mustache, I see my sister with cancer." Needless to say, we didn't have a party, but now his face matches our present reality - Jeanine without cancer. Hip-hip-hooray!

The Sketchbook Project: 2011

By chance, I happened to notice a Facebook advertisement that promoted a sketchbook project. Intrigued, I clicked on the ad. (Normally, I totally ignore Facebook's planted advertisements, but this one genuinely caught my eye.) The ad brought me to one of the most interesting projects I have ever come across. The website drew me in right away with the following statement:

"It's like a concert tour but with sketchbooks."

Upon further investigation I learned that The Sketchbook Project is a reoccurring event established by Art House, a Brooklyn, New York based gallery. Their mission? In the words of the creators - to create "massive, international art projects that tie thousands of artists together - and anyone can participate."

How cool is that? I love a challenge and a creative one at that. I signed up immediately. The deadline for me to submit my completed sketchbook is December 31, 2010. After that, you can visit it on the tour. Every sketchbook has a theme. What theme did I choose? Happy thoughts, of course. I thought it was appropriate given the pure joy that art gives me. I'm also going to have my sketchbook digitized so that it can live on in cyberspace infamy in addition to becoming a part of the permanent collection in The Brooklyn Art Gallery. (Yet another reason for me to visit New York one day!)

I have already received my sketchbook in the mail and can't wait to get started. I'll be posting selected entries from it as the months progress, feeling like a rock star. Won't you join me on the tour?

A Beautiful Walk with Friends

I've often driven past the walking/biking trail overpass for the North Carolina Museum of Art on I-440 but had never been there myself until recently. With the weather getting warmer and my desire to be outside increasing, I decided to visit the trail before the North Carolina humidity becomes too much to bear. Luckily, my friends Alfonso and Beth decided to join me.

An Exercise in Courage

As some of you may already know, I enrolled in Kelly Rae Robert's online class, Flying Lessons. For a long time I've been half-assing my attempts of forging a creative life. At the beginning of the year, I was super motivated and went as far as registering my business name with the Register of Deeds. But as I got deeper into establishing an online creative business, I found myself frozen with fear. Could I really do this? What if I fail at this? What if no one likes what I create? And then I found Kelly's blog about her class...

It was a serendipitous moment. I was searching for something, anything, that would help me get out of this rut. I knew what I wanted to do, but I just didn't know how to get there. The more research I did about starting a small business, the more I became unsure of the whole thing. Creative businesses are unlike any other small businesses. And asking someone who is right-brained to use her left-brain to sort out all the details of a business is like asking someone who is right-handed to write with her left hand. Though not impossible, it is quite difficult. In researching the how-to's of starting a creative business, I felt like the answers that I needed weren't answered yet or weren't geared toward someone like me. But after finding Kelly's blog, I knew that I wasn't alone.

Her story is inspiring and could not be closer to my reality. She had been ignoring the whispers in her heart all of her life, and it wasn't until she was 30 that she decided to listen. What did the whispers tell her? To follow her heart and become an artist. No formal schooling, just a passion to do as she dreamed.

Kelly's class is one that addresses all of the dreams and fears I have been feeling lately. And to top it off, I'm not the only one in the universe who feels this way. Although the class just started on Sunday, I already feel like I'm making progress. I have no one's time line to live up to but my own.

So here's to forging new paths and facing your fears head on! Whoo hoo!

My friend Jeanine is surviving and thriving after breast cancer.

Since the beginning of Jeanine's diagnosis, she has had to learn to do something that is outside of her comfort zone -- ask for help. Although she is cancer free, she is still undergoing treatments that occasionally leave her feeling tired and less than her normal mover-and-shaker self.

Week 47

She is a woman who is used to doing things on her own. But, if anything, cancer has taught her that asking for help is not a weakness. In fact, it takes strength to reach out and be vulnerable enough to let someone help you when you are in need. It allows her to be a better woman, a better mother, and a better friend.

Week 48

Artsplosure in Raleigh

Yesterday, I attended Artsplosure, an arts festival that takes place in downtown Raleigh every year. This was the first year I got to attend, and I was definitely up for some sun and inspiration. Moore Square and the City Market area of downtown were blocked off completely. All one could see were tents upon tents of artists and their work. I was like a kid in a candy store. It was a beautiful day, but it was so hot outside. (Hard to believe that we're still in spring.) But I didn't let the heat get me down. How could I with so much local art to see and explore?

Although much of the work that was on display was beautiful, only two artists really grabbed my attention.

The first artist was Eddie Maier of Eddie Spaghetti Art. When I arrived at his booth, he was giving a demonstration of how to create an ink print using organic materials like a stem of grass. (He even let me try my hand at it!) His work consisted of single wood block prints and the use of reduction printing. When I reviewed his portfolio of work, I was drawn to his ability to make earthy and organic drawings. I've always been drawn to printing and would love to try it one day.

The second artist I encountered was Yvonne Miller of Four Footed Art. Her booth was filled with so much color and texture that I just had to purchase a print! Although she primarily paints pet portraits, her other work is just as vibrant and fun. And did I mention she was super friendly as well? A portion of the proceeds she makes from her art goes to the Atlanta Humane Society.

If you have the opportunity to go, make your way down to Artsplosure. You never know what treasures you will find and which new artists you will come to adore.

An Artist in the Making

My love for drawing began when I was very young. Some of my first memories were drawing and taping my masterpieces to the walls and doors of our home. In a way, I was creating my own gallery of work. Just being able to create gave me joy.

But somewhere along the way, I lost the desire to create. I grew up and allowed myself to be convinced that it was nonsensical to be an artist. I spent four years earning a degree in education only to abandon the profession altogether. Now that I am in a different career, I still yearn for that dream of being a working artist, but something holds me back. Sometimes, I feel like that feeling of regret, of not originally pursuing art in college, keeps me frozen with the fear of failure. I make small, incremental steps toward being an artist -- but what about the things I need to do that go beyond just creating art? You know, like promoting and actually selling my art, the not-so-creative-but-necessary part of it all? Sometimes the pressure of making it real makes me feel like a deer stuck in headlights. I know that I need to work on a plan and clarify what my goals really are. But where do I start?

I thought about these things when I traveled home to Swansboro last weekend to visit my sister and my mother for Mother's Day. (Sometimes a day with the ones you love can be the best medicine for what ails you.) While back in my hometown, I got to spend some quality time with my niece, Lennox, who will be turning two this July. Each time I see her, she becomes more and more independent, smart, and sassy -- exactly the kind of woman I want to be.

She's a take charge kind of gal, and, guess what? She loves to draw.

Watching Lennox take joy in drawing makes me think back to my childhood and how I felt when I would draw. Whatever Lennox chooses to do in life, I hope she chooses to follow her passion. And I know that there's still time for me to do the same.

Over the course of the next few months, I will be taking steps to reassess my goals so that I can be the kind of artist that I want to be. I'm excited about the journey and am glad that you will be a part of it.

Words to Live By: Weeks 44, 45, & 46

My friend Jeanine is surviving and thriving after breast cancer.

Jeanine was asked by her doctor to be interviewed in a video project that she is spearheading with another doctor in Miami. The video will contain interviews with breast cancer survivors and their experiences since being diagnosed. To prepare for the interview, Jeanine read back through journal entries she kept since being diagnosed with breast cancer. In preparing for the interview, she was able to relive moments almost forgotten and re-cherish sacred moments anew. It will a be a year in June since she was first diagnosed... can you believe it? We are all so proud of her and can't wait to see her film debut.

Week 44

Jeanine and Terry also celebrated 15 years of marriage on April 22nd. Yay!

Week 45

Terry is still recuperating from his surgery, so, Jason, being the nice brother that he is, drove down to Burlington to help Jeanine get the pool ready for summer among other things. And he did all that for a cheeseburger and french fries. What a guy!

Week 46

Leo Monahan - Collage Artist and Paper Sculptor

One of the artists that I had the pleasure of visiting on the Weaverville Art Safari was Leo Monahan. His beautiful home is nestled amongst the clouds overlooking his neighbors in the town of Barnardsville. When we arrived at his studio, a "How you doin'" mat greeted us at the entrance. When you enter Monahan's studio, you are instantly greeted by his intricate and mesmerizing paper creations. Each piece is carefully and skillfully cut by hand. Monahan draws with his blade; he does not sketch out his pieces on paper before he cuts them. I asked him how he learned to create the complicated geometric shapes his pieces. He replied that he taught himself, experimenting and cutting the paper to bring his pieces to life. Using a scrap piece of two-ply Strathmore paper, he demonstrated how he cuts folds into the paper and bends it to give it shape. He just made it look so easy.

Monahan shared with his visitors that day that there are basically four things you can do to paper. You can cut it, bend it, fold it, and paint it. He does it all. To see samples of his amazing portfolio, click here or here. To hear an interview with Monahan, click here (Thanks, Lynn!).

Monahan received the first Walt Disney art honor scholarship, allowing him to study fine art at the Chouinard Art Institute. And although he received formal training in the arts, he is a self taught paper sculptor. When he began his career as a paper sculptor 35 years ago, not many people were doing the work he continues to do today. This has made his work rare, special, and in-demand. He honed his craft over the years, earning numerous professional accolades. He was recognized by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles for his work and received a life time achievement award.

With such an established career, some may be intimidated by Monahan's accomplishments. However, he was very approachable. He was such a delight to speak with, so friendly and so welcoming. On my way out of his studio, he gave me a poster of one of his creations and gave me some invaluable materials regarding the concept of creativity and the idea of the collage as a metaphor for change. He was just so supportive and willing to share so much.

He truly was an inspiration to meet.

Weaverville Art Safari

Every spring and every fall, the communities of Weaverville, Barnardsville, and Alexander hold the Weaverville Art Safari. Established in 2001 to help promote the arts, the Weaverville Art Safari is a self-guided tour of local artists' studios located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Jason and I stumbled upon this gem of a tour during our first trip to Asheville in 2008. When I got the opportunity to accompany my friend, Angela, to Asheville AND stay with Amanda, John, Craig, and Rebecca at their cottage in the mountains, I seized the opportunity. I was so happy to find out that the tour would also be that very weekend. It was meant to be.

After a delicious breakfast at the Over Easy Cafe, we began our tour on a gorgeous Saturday morning. With 41 artists on the safari, we had to be selective with our limited time. Although we eventually ran into some April showers, we ended up visiting 17 of the 41 studios on our handy dandy map. Their specialties ranged from pottery to hand carved wood work to paper sculptures to wearable art. The tour had a well-balanced variety of show-cased artists.

As a new artist, I loved being able to visit established artists and see their work and creative spaces in such a personal way. So many of them were willing to share their techniques and tell stories about how they started their artistic careers. When you're new to the creative journey, it's so comforting to hear that you're not alone and see that it IS possible to make a living following your creative dream. If nothing else, you leave feeling inspired.

The next safari is in November, right around the time the Blue Ridge Mountains are exploding with autumn colors. If you are an art lover and are able, please go... and take me with you.

I had the pleasure of doing some commissioned work for my friend, Angela. She wanted to give a special gift to a retiring principal in her circle of educators. She knew she wanted to give the principal something unique and special. After going through some ideas, Angela settled on having me design some special coasters and a t-shirt with a bee theme.

At the principal's school, she taught three main ideals to her students -- Be kind, be responsible, and be respectful. She was like a queen bee, in charge and responsible for the success of her hive.

In making the coasters, I decided to add some of my own mantras for her to enjoy -- Be happy, be fabulous, and be retired. She deserves it after all.

Ceramic Tile and Alcohol Ink Mania!

After reading Artsyville's tutorial on ceramic tile and alcohol ink, I just couldn't wait to try it!

Back in February, I invited my friends, Amanda and Beth, to come over to try the tutorial with me. Not sure what to expect, we surveyed the list of materials:

Mod Podge Hard Coat
1" brush
Adirondack alcohol inks
Adirondack alcohol blending solution
old tooth brush

I got the party started by diving into the alcohol blending solution. I swirled it around the surface of my tile with an old toothbrush. Then, I selected one of the alcohol inks to drip onto the tile... and magic. The colors spread out and sometimes swirl when you add them. Amanda and Beth jumped in and also got some amazing effects on their tiles, too. Here are the fruits of our labor:

I think the hardest part of the whole process was waiting for each coat of the Mod Podge Hard Coat to dry (20 minutes for each coat!). After the girls left for the night, I continued on to design some insects for my tiles. I was already using decoupage sealer. Might as well decoupage an original design, too, right? Here's what I came up with:

And to finish things off, I gave each tile a few coats of water-based varnish and a nice cork backing. I think I just found my new addiction.

Craft Social and Cupcake Stands

Every once in a while, I get together with my friends and participate in a craft social. I began organizing them as a way to facilitate and allot some creative time in my life. And what's more fun than socializing with friends over food, drinks, and crafts? Sometimes when we get together we have a specific project in mind; sometimes we just end up hauling our craft scraps over to a friend's house to see what we can make. Either way, we have a good time and have goodies to show off when it's all said and done.

This past weekend, we got together at my friend Cree's house (Shannon's mom) to make tiered cupcake stands. We got the original idea from the blog, Giver's Log, but ended up having to change some of the necessary materials in order to put the whole thing together. (We just couldn't find the proper candle stick holders anywhere!)

We got off to a good start, drilling holes in each decorative plastic plate we had purchased for the project. The drill bit got pretty hot during this process... I think I even saw it smoking a little. Yikes!

But as we came to the step of assembling the stands, we realized that the threads we purchased were too long. Boo.

Luckily, Cree's husband, Robert, was able to use his hack saw to shorten it. Once we found the right length, Beth, Alfonso, and Jason shortened the rest with a little team work.

Although we were happy with the results, the project was one of the more labor intensive projects I have ever done. Now I just need a good cupcake recipe so I can test out my finished product... Mmm... Any suggestions?

Summer Pierre Rocks!

When I first began this journey of pursuing my creative and artistic dream, I looked for role models to inspire me. Surely, there was someone out there who understood. I searched for others who we going through the same struggles and challenges that I was going through. Through the gift of chance, I discovered Summer Pierre. An artist, a writer, and a singer/song writer, this amazing lady pursued her artistic dream and did so with a day job.

Back in November 2007, Summer created her own 'zine called "The Artist in the Office: Living the Dream with a Day Job." It was her manifesto that challenged the notion that in order to be a true artist, one had to be a purist, pursuing only art full time. Her 'zine featured words of encouragement and had endless examples of well-known artists who pursued their creative dreams with a day job. That 'zine was a source of inspiration for me. It made me believe that, yes, I, too, can be an artist and not feel guilty that I have to have a job to pay the bills.

So you can imagine my happiness when I saw this video post from Summer's blog last year.

A year later, her book entitled "The Artist in the Office: How to Creatively Survive and Thrive Seven Days a Week" was released in February 2010. I promptly picked up a copy... and LOVED it. I have even convinced people who aren't pursuing an artistic dream to read this book as I find its message can apply to anyone. Here's a woman who not only believed in what she preached but made her dreams come true.

My friend Jeanine is surviving and thriving after breast cancer.

Jeanine has the biggest heart of anyone I know. She recently started a walking club of sorts for family and friends on Facebook. The group is called "Walking to Afghanistan for Ben". Ben is our nephew who is currently serving as a Marine in Afghanistan. To show him our support, Jeanine is collecting donated miles from group members until we have collectively walked enough miles to reach Afghanistan. The goal? Well, as Jeanine puts it: "As a show of support, I am trying to organize a group of people who are willing to donate their daily mileage (walking or running) so that we can get to Afghanistan to give him a great big hug. Think of it this way- A mile a day while Ben's away." How awesome is that?

Jeanine has big dreams on the horizon. I mean BIG. It's exciting to talk with her and hear her ideas of the kind of legacy she wants to create and leave in the world. It makes me feel honored and inspired to know her. She is such a charismatic person and can energize you just by speaking with her. Nothing seems insurmountable or unattainable. Her optimism is contagious. I dare you to try to ignore it.

Although she is this vivacious, talented, and wonderful woman, there is something that is looming around the corner... her husband's foot surgery. As Jeanine describes it: "As a woman who has not lifted a finger cleaning the house, doing dishes, laundry- just about everything for the past 9 months.....I am being pulled out of my fairy tale land next Wednesday when Terry has surgery and will not be able to walk for 8 weeks. What a good man! What a horrible Wednesday it will be! By the way- if anyone knows anyone willing to do all of these things for free- you're hired!" Best wishes to Terry and Jeanine next week (and for the next eight weeks)!

Art for Charity

I'm a big believer in giving. The mere act of giving can help one recognize their own humanity and can make someone else's world a little brighter. Giving, if done for unselfish reasons, is a liberating and freeing thing to do.

I recently decided to give of myself the best way I know how - through my art. My best friend, Angela, is an assistant principal at a junior high school, asked if I would be willing to offer my artistic services to her school this month for Relay for Life. Originally, she asked if I could do caricatures at the event to help raise money, and, although I enjoy drawing people, caricatures make me nervous. I proposed, instead, to donate eight paintings to be auctioned off at the event.

The paintings have been keeping me busy for the past couple of weeks. I began by painting several canvases, each with a different color and background. I then began drawing a unique illustration for each canvas, sometimes drawing girls and sometimes drawing imaginary creatures. I then colored the drawings with watercolor pencils, carefully cut out each illustration, and Mod Podged each drawing to a canvas. Each painting was created using a 12x12 canvas and features a handwritten quote. I hope people find them interesting and worth taking home.

My New and Improved Space

When Jason and I first began searching for a new home, I dreamed of the day I would have my own space -- a space for creating and producing my art. When we finally purchased our home in the summer of 2008, I was just giddy with excitement. I cordoned off one of the bedrooms and converted it into my own art studio. Though it was a little small, it was cozy and all mine.

Fast forward to 2010. Brace yourself as you bear witness to the state in which the studio was kept... Eeeeeek!

Clutter, Chaos, and Wasted Closet Space!

I knew something had to be done about this hot mess. The state of chaos often forced me to do work in the dining room or living room. There just wasn't space to do anything creative in the actual studio. The lack of organization left me with an icky feeling, especially when I had to go in there to use the computer.

So I decided to take action and ask for help.

I went to Lowes and purchased a Rubbermaid closet organization kit. With the help of my friends Beth and Shannon, the new closet was installed in about an hour and a half. Once the closet space was reclaimed, Shannon put on her organization hat and forced me to go through various piles I had avoided for months (she's one tough cookie). After five hours of cleaning and organizing, I ended up with the following heavenly results:

Scherenschnitte Under the Sea

There once lived a mermaid trapped in the mind of an artist. All she wanted was to swim in a beautiful sea.

The artist heard the mermaid's lament and decided to set her free.

The artist drew the mermaid on some pretty paper and cut her loose.

The artist also gave her a sister so that the mermaid would not be lonely in her new world.

The artist covered the sister mermaids in glue so that they could be safe and secure in their new ocean home.

But the glue proved to be a bit unforgiving... Oopsie.

The mermaids forgave the artist. Afterall, she was setting them free into a beautiful underwater home. Their only request was to be made pink (their favorite color). All was forgiven and they lived happily ever after.

Wow... Has it really been three weeks?! Holy smokes. A lot has happened since Week 37... For instance, I got a bad case of the stomach virus that incapacitated me for a few days. Getting sick definitely through me off my creative schedule. I feel like I am just now getting back into the swing of things as far as my art is concerned. But enough about me...

Jeanine and I got together the first week in March to have a long deserved Girl's Night and watched Spring Awakening at the DPAC. Despite being pumped to see the show after receiving several assurances from others that the musical was amazing, it fell short of our expectations. The cast was definitely talented and the music was very entertaining, but the story just did nothing for us. C'est la vie. (To make up for it, we're planning to have another Girl's Night with our fellow Patten women to see Wicked in Charlotte. Yippee!)

During the second week of March, Jeanine had to go to the doctor to get some tests run for recurring head pain. After many tests, nothing could be pin pointed to explain the headache-like symptoms. In the spirit of looking for the silver lining, at least the doctor didn't find anything serious. But it still pains me that she has to experience any pain or discomfort.

Last week, Jeanine took her son to his first middle school dance. Can you believe it? My, how time flies. I remember when Jake was just a wee little lad when Jason and I first started dating. Now he's taller than me and growing into quite a handsome young man. I know that he is one of Jeanine's greatest accomplishments and inspirations in life.

Here's to hoping many good things for Jeanine in April and the months to come.

I Heart Schnitzels

Last Thursday, my friend, Amanda, and I signed up to take a German paper cutting class called "scherenschnitte." It means "scissor cuts" in German. Neither of us could pronounce this, so we decided to refer to the class as schnitzeling. (Yes, I know that schnitzel is a sausage, but it's the closest we could come to pronouncing the word.)

So on Thursday, we found ourselves trekking across NC State's godforsaken campus, full of pot holes and road construction, to the Pullen Arts Center (we made it there after two or three attempts despite using a GPS). The class, however, was worth the trouble. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and friendly. She provided us with special scissors for cutting, different weights of cutting paper, a light table, and a packet of templates to try. We had two hours to cut and snip to our heart's content. Amanda and I both tried the hardest patterns the instructor had to offer. I figured, if I'm taking the class, I want to be able to show I learned something.

With a little extra time at the end of class, I decided to try and create some of my own miniature schitznels. They didn't turn out as well as I had liked, but it gave me ideas for the future...

Although scherenschnitte can be killer on your hands (those scissors are just so small), I can see myself trying it again the future. Einen schönen Tag noch!

One-of-a-Kind Stencil Art

I have a new addiction. It's fabric stenciling.

Back in November, I read this interesting article on How About Orange's blog regarding freezer paper stenciling. After tracking down the materials needed for the project, I decided to experiment by creating one-of-a-kind designs for the young babies in my life.

To start, you need:

Jacquard textile paint
Sponge applicator brush
Reynold's Freezer Paper
Exacto knife or scissors
Pencil
Fabric (i.e. cotton t-shirt, canvas bag, etc.)
Iron and ironing board

Tear out a piece of freezer paper. With the plastic coated side facing down, use a pencil to draw your design on the paper side of the freezer paper. Use an exacto knife or scissors to carefully cut out the design.

Iron the prepared freezer paper to the fabric with the plastic coated side facing down. The plastic side of the freezer paper will stick to the fabric. Turn the fabric over (or inside out) to iron on a larger plain sheet of freezer paper. (This extra sheet of freezer paper will act as a barrier so that the textile paint won't soak through.)

Once the stencil has been applied to your fabric, dab your sponge applicator into the textile paint. (You only need a little to start with.) Carefully dab the paint into your stencil. Smooth and wipe excess paint from your stencil using the sponge applicator. Allow the paint to dry. Clean the sponge applicator with water.

After the paint has dried, remove the freezer paper stencil. Follow the directions on the textile paint bottle for setting the paint.

To make sure the designs were durable and kid-friendly, I threw a batch of them into the washer. They came out fine and did not bleed. I allowed them to dry on a rack and then ironed the wrinkles out.

I found this project to be fun and easy. Although cutting out the stencils was time consuming, for Zora, Phoenix, Lennox, and Kingston, it was worth it.

When Your Heart is Filled with Dance

My friend, Meredith, and I have a lot in common.

We both graduated from college with a degree in English education. We both taught English abroad (she taught in Bolivia; I taught in Okinawa). We both taught English in the North Carolina public school system for one year. We both dropped out of education after completing that year and are both "gladly" repaying the state for our short-lived career choice. And now we both work at the same company.

Another thing we have in common is our love for dance. I love to dance, and so does Meredith. If the right song comes on the radio, you could probably find us bopping to its beat. But between the two of us, Meredith has the heart of a real dancer. With formal training in ballet and in tap under her belt, her love for dance is reflected in her personality. She doesn't skip a beat and has a graceful presence. (And on those rare occasions, you can even catch her leaping in front of my office window like a sprite ballerina.)

So to complement her bright and cheery personality, I decided to create this collage for her. Dance is how she is able to express herself. Art is how I am able to express myself. Here the two are dancing together.

I was looking forward to spending a day snow tubing in Boone with Jeanine, Jake, and the rest of the Patten clan, but our plans have been dashed by the arrival of snow. Seven inches to be exact. Looks like we'll all be playing in the snow whether we wanted to or not.

Funny thing about snow. When it falls, it can make everything look so pristine and clean outside, reminding us that there is opportunity for change and adventure at a moment's notice.

With Snow, There is Snow Cream

Beginning Friday evening, snow began to fall... and fall... and fall. It created an icy blanket on everything we owned. For a week, we had been warned by the local weather channel of its impending arrival, but, living in central North Carolina, we take the announcement of snow with a grain of salt. However, when it does come, we find ourselves ill-equipped to adapt to our new snowy environment. Often advised to stay home and out of harm's way as the state tries to find the resources to clear roads and attend to weather-related accidents, it's a wonder that any good can come from snow.

Ah, but there is good. With the arrival of snow, there is opportunity for snow cream.

Although I missed the opportunity to try this recipe last year, I made sure this year I was prepared. So without further ado, here is how you make snow cream.

Step One: After an hour after the snow has started to fall, put out a big kitchen bowl to collect the snow.

Step Two: Gather all your ingredients: 1 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Step Three: Place the milk, sugar, and vanilla in a blender.

Step Four: Add the snow to the blender. Mix well.

Hmm... It's not mixing...

Step Five: Unplug the blender and stir the mixture by hand.

Step Six: Scoop mixture in a glass. Garnish as desired.

And now for the taste test...

It's a winner! Next time you find yourself cursing the snow, try this recipe instead. It may sweeten the experience for you.

Twice the Blessings

I was recently commissioned to design a baby shower invitation for Jeanine, whose friend, Melissa, is having twins. The theme for the piece was "Two Peas in a Pod."

At first, I was nervous about doing a commissioned piece. I had these thoughts in the back of my mind as I started:

"What if she doesn't like the design?"
"What if I can't produce her vision for the design?"
Worse yet, "What if she changes her mind and decides 'Thanks, but no thanks'?"

However, as I went through the process, I found that it wasn't as difficult as I had imagined. Although I had fears of not living up to Jeanine's expectations, she willingly offered her input but made it clear that she was really relying on me to have ownership of the vision of the design. She put all her trust in my artsy hands.

After proposing a few sketches and receiving confirmation of the design, I was given free reign to make the design come to life.

In the end, I tried to draw the picture a little bit for Jeanine and a little bit for myself. I know that I still need practice in finding the right balance between artistic expression and creating pieces for someone else. But I think I will get there eventually and even have some fun along the way.

Week 32

Donning Our Crowns

Not too long ago, my friend, Shannon, informed me that she needed something happy for her office wall. "What would you like?" I asked. "Oh, I don't know...Surprise me," she said. The gauntlet was thrown down before me - a challenge!

After thinking on it for a while, I knew exactly what to draw.

After researching some images online, I found the perfect models from which to create Shannon's piece. For months, she's been trying to find a cute cloche hat but has been unable to find one. Why not showcase the hat of her adoration in a work of art?

To begin, I drew the designs on paper and inked them in with Sharpie. Next, I scribbled color onto the designs using my favorite coloring medium, water color pencils.

Once the color was completed, I carefully blended the colors using a small water color brush and water.

After the color dried, I used my handy Cutter Bee scissors to cut the designs out of the paper.

Once the figures were removed, I selected a coordinating piece of designer scrapbook paper in which to paste the designs. I used Mod Podge on the back and on the surface of the designs to adhere them to the scrapbook paper.

The figures started to bubble as they dried, so I used a blunt plastic tool to smooth them out.

To finish the piece, I added a quote to the drawing that I thought reflected the feel of the piece (oh, how I love my quotes). I hope she enjoys it!

One of my new year's resolutions was to build a website to showcase my artwork and other creative interests. I attempted this effort in 2008, but didn't really follow through with the updates or maintenance. However, my good friend, Alfonso, offered to help me to get Inochi Designs up and running in full force.

Since we both had the day off yesterday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we decided to get together and revamp the existing site. I had a vision and prepared some sketches for Alfonso so that he would have an idea of what to build. Much to my delight he was able to make it come to life. It only took about three hours (and an agreement to watch Ninja Assassin with him at the dollar theater afterward).
